Was Jesus Actually a Vegan? DEBATE: Christian Animal Activist vs Reverend Hunter
Kam Waters, co-creator of the documentary film soon to be released, Christspiracy, sits down with Tony Jones from The Reverend Hunter Podcast to debate if Jesus was actually a vegan.
The Film “Christspiracy” documents Kam’s personal quest, as a lover of Christ, across the globe to answer the question “is there a spiritual way to kill an animal?” interviewing theologians, archeologists, Christian farmers and more. Kam grew up in the Bible Belt, was born and raised in the Christian church, and began questioning his traditions’ position on animal ethics when he realized there was more to the story than he had been told.

    I have so much going through my mind from this podcast. I don't agree with everything from either side. Ellen, I really enjoy your podcasts! Very thought provoking. I am a Seventh-day Adventist Christian. We are known as one of the blue zone groups which are some of the longest living people in the world due to our lifestyle, predominantly plant based. I would love to hear an Adventist perspective on biblical reasons for a healthy plant based lifestyle on your podcast. I think you would find our perspective to bring added clarity on the topic. Some things that came to mind as I listened to this podcast... 1. God's perfect design for us can be seen in the biblical account of the creation story. This is where we see Gods creation existing before we fell to Satan's temptations....until we did, which was when our first parents disobeyed God and ate the forbidden fruit. Before the fall we ate only plants and the animals ate only plants. There was no death before the fall. The same will be true in heaven and when the new Jerusalem comes down out of heaven and God recreates this earth. The book of revelation tells us there will be no more death, sorrow, or crying because the former things have passed away. In the same chapter the Lord says, "Behold I make all things new" . The bible is literal and the creation week did happen. We didn't evolve, we were created by a loving God and in the way He knew we would live best. And there was no need for b12 before the fall....after the fall to sin , yes, our soils eventually depleted to the point it is now needed. We live in an imperfect world now. 2. It seems that Jesus likely did eat fish. He lived a humble life and recognized that the people He was seeking to reach lived mostly off of fish and bread. They were poor fishermen and it was their lifestyle to live this way. He wasn't going to come in and uproot all of that. He came to teach the kingdom of God. And since Jesus loves animals I'm sure he leaned towards other foods but it doesn't mean that he turned away fish if it was offered to him or condemned the people he was trying to reach because they made their living as fishermen. They weren't running slaughter houses and mistreating animals. They were doing what happens in nature since sin entered the world, fishing to survive. Not God's ideal but not something to condemn the people of his time for either. Would Jesus condemn the cruel way factory farms are run, I'm sure He would. It's not compassion and it's unnecessary cruelty. But let's not forget there are certain locations in the world today that do need to hunt to survive. They are doing the best they can. Again not the ideal diet but they are making use of what's available to them. 3. There is biblical evidence that a plant based diet is the healthiest. As mentioned, it was God's original diet plan for us. The one He knew would suit us best. When the Israelites came out of egypt and lived in the wilderness, God fed them manna but they desired the flesh pots of egypt and so God sent them quail. However, God warned them that the meat would bring sickness and disease amongst them. God didn't force them to remain eating manna , which was a food that fell from heaven, but He didn't force them to not eat meat either. He is a God of free choice but He always warns us of the consequences. We also read the story of Daniel and his friends who were captives in Babylon. They were the only people eating a plant based diet, free of the king's meat and wine , and they proved to be ten times smarter than those eating all of the king's food. So they were allowed to continue in their healthy lifestyle and progressed in wisdom and position above all of the kings wisemen. What an example of honoring God's ideal. 4. There is no biblical support to the eating of unclean meat. The Bible is clear that God does not change. . He is the same yesterday, today and forever. He gave the Israelite Nation clear instructions on what animals they could eat if they chose to and what animals they could not. These are animals that tend to have the purpose of cleaning the earth and waters, so they are taking in a lot of harmful stuff in their diets. When Peter had been praying and the Lord showed Him unclean meats and said kill eat and peter said never for he had never eaten what God had said was unclean. If you read on in the book of Acts it clearly tells us that the purpose of what was revealed to Peter was to teach Him that non Jewish people (gentiles) were not unclean. Christ had died for them and the gospel was for their acceptance too. For all people. God didn't all of a sudden change His mind and say that all types of meats were ok. Peter had struggled to accept gentile believers, as had many Jews, and the Lord was seeking to teach Peter truth. 5. Animals were sacrificed in the Bible and God gave directions as to the sacrificial system. It was meant to give understanding to the Israelite nation, who were slaves in egypt for hundreds of years, understanding of the plan of salvation as they got to know who God was again after He set them free from Egypt. The sanctuary was set up and later the temple in which animals were sacrificed for the sins of the people. God showed moses and solomon how both should be set up and operate. It was meant to give understanding to the people of how the saviour of the world would come and pay the price for the sins of the people. The bible says that the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ. Once Jesus came the symbolic sacrificial system was no longer needed as what it pointed to was fulfilled in Christ "the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world". No, God certainly did not take any pleasure in the death of these animals or in sacrifice and He took no pleasure in the death of His Son on the cross, however, these sacrifices were necessary. The people needed this system to understand the consequences of their sins, taking the life of one of their own animals whom they loved, and that a price has to be paid for their sin. It was the life of an innocent victim which pointed to Christ as the sinless one who would die for the sins of the world so we can live. The blood of animals never took away sins but it pointed the people to our Saviour whose blood would take away our sins. 6. Lets note that from a health perspective, meat and fish are not what they used to be back in biblical days. We now have hormones, factory farms, mercury and other contaminants, just to name a few of the reasons meat and meat products are no longer safe to eat. Theres so many reasons for our health that support not eating meat. Plant based reverses disease and leads to longer life. The Bible tells us that whatever we eat or drink we should do it all to the glory of God and that our bodies are the temple of God. We are meant to care for them. More could be said on this topic but this response is already too long. I would say God's ideal should always be what we should strive for and from that we will see the blessings in a life of health and happiness. There is also so much more to health and happiness than what we eat. Gods peace ❤️

    Go and find out what is meant by the scripture that says: ‘It is kindness that I want, not animal sacrifices.’” (Jesus, Gospel of Matthew 9:13, Good News translation) The carnistic premise or bias of Western church tradition about eating meat is really based on European dietary customs, but they have made use of a couple of verses from the orthodox New Testament in order to reinforce their already established preference for eating meat. Jesus told people that He would be the sacrifice so that they would stop harming animals. He was a raw fruitarian who required meat eaters to be cleansed before they entered His house to talk with Him. (The story about the fish and the loaves was added to the Bible 300 years after He walked on Earth. It was one of 30,000 changes that were made to the original Bible. Paul was the one who said that it was o.k. to eat animals. He never met Jesus and had an agenda that was not pure.

    1 CORINTHIANS 8:7-13 Clearly states we are free in Christ to eat meat HOWEVER if it causes the weaker brother or sister to stumble, we are to ABSTAIN out of love for that person. This passage speaks directly to eating in an idols temple but at the end Paul says if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat. So hes talking about NOT making a brother stumble through the consumption of meat.. We are free in Christ to eat meat unless it is causing someone to stumble. It's very straight forward. I don't know why there is a debate about this? 7However, not all possess this knowledge. But some, through former association with idols, eat food as really offered to an idol, and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. 8Food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. 9But take care that this right of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. 10For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating in an idol 's temple, will he not be encouraged, if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols? 11And so by your knowledge this weak person is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died. 12Thus, sinning against your brothers and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. 13Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble.

First of all… you quickly learn that your baby was not just a “clump of cells” when you are holding their tinyyyy lifeless body in your hand and then flush their corpse down the toilet as if he or she was just a period blood clot. Even if you’re 100% atheist and don’t believe in God, mothers were not biologically designed to murder our babies. The toll it takes on you physically, mentally and emotionally is unlike any other pain I’ve ever experienced. I liken it to the emotional trauma of a miscarriage, only every time you grieve the loss of your child, you’re simultaneously riddled with the shame and guilt of knowing your child died at your own hands.

    I am a Christian, I am vegan and I have a bachelor in theology with a specialization in Ancient Greek. I’ve been vegan for 8 years now. I have my own convictions about it and truly believe that everyone can benefit from this lifestyle. I think in a lot of ways it also honors God ethically and morally and even health wise (such as taking care of our bodies)… That being said, I agree with the reverend on everything. And I find Kam’s arguments to be almost disturbing as their credibility and critical analysis seems skewed by his own beliefs. Not that I agree with eating meat, but that I understand the righteous anger the reverend has about someone breaking apart the Bible-and apparently extra-biblical texts?-to form an opinion and call it truth when it is based solely on what they are choosing to believe for themselves. I think it is completely misrepresenting and misunderstanding the entire word of God to not study it through the lens of seeking to understand God and instead reading it to understand self. The wages for sin is death. That is law. That is true. It is why Jesus died for our sins. It is why sacrifice was law. Blood is sacred in the Bible. It represents life. So Christ fulfilling the ultimate sacrifice for our sins on the cross was meant to allow us relationship with him without death being the consequences for falling short. It’s not some conspiracy or strange weird amalgamation of beliefs that people eat and ate animals… it’s just in the Bible. There are tons of things that the Bible covers that I don’t work out in my own life (ie old law head coverings, Torah law sacrifice, justification by works rather than justification by faith as outlined in the NT….) that are contextual to the entire story of the Bible. New verses old convent. I get being angry and not knowing how to explain that what Kam is doing is not just trying to share why he thinks Christ was vegan… but he’s actually bending and twisting truth in an attempt to make sense of the Bible through his own world view. I do not agree with killing animals, but that doesn’t mean that God doesn’t allow it. There are things he disagrees with too but allows because we live in a fallen world. For instance, divorce. Even that has guidelines to it which Jesus clearly outlined in Matthew 18:8-9. It seems to me that this was not a debate about Jesus being or not being a vegan. Instead, it sounds like a debate of if the Bible is accurate and true- and of course as a Christian, your answer to both of those should be yes without if ands or buts. Because if we believe the word of God transcended time, regardless of the hands that carried it through to what we read now, God is the ultimate authority who has allowed it to be who has kept it and will continue to because that is who he is. He is consistent. That is his nature. And so is the Bible. It is his word it is life-giving and it is infallible. But on the matter of this debate… Yes, I am a Christian. Yes, I’m also vegan. And no, it doesn’t rock my whole world to know that Jesus wasn’t.

    • @alexinhoMelius
      @alexinhoMelius 8 часов назад

      One of the 10 commandments is not to kill. This sin is way worse than a divorce, so your comparison is irrelevant to the point of the discussion. Secondly, what you are saying is that if someone changes something in the bible, then God intervenes and changes the ink on the text to correct it. No, He wouldn't do it and it doesn't work like. People in power on history could have done anything they like. So, if they wanted to mistranslate a scripture, they could easily do it. Even today we can see different versions of the bible. Why do they even exist?? So, please, don't say illogical things. You sound naive.

    • @kamh2os
      @kamh2os 8 часов назад

      I agree with you on God’s allowance, and often discuss the divorce example… due to hardness of heart. In fact, the scriptures admit this fact in Ezekiel 20:25 when it says ““I (God) gave them statutes that were not good and rules by which they could not have life, I defiled them through their sacrificial offerings.”God allowed animal sacrifice, even though it’s not approved. That’s out of respect for free will, and learning from consequences of natural law. In fact, every time it says God “commanded” animal sacrifice, that verb there is actually a Hebrew “Hiph’il” verb form, which can be read both causative and passive… in other words, it can read “God allowed”, just as accurately. It’s all dependent on the lens of the reader. And the best lens is Christ and his portrayed mercy! So it’s not necessary. I also believe the Bible is true! I think you are representing my beliefs accurately. I just also know from deep study and analysis with scholars in biblical hermeneutics l, that Jeremiah was right when he condemned “the lying pen of the scribes which falsified the Torah”. Even Jesus condemned the scribes. Documents are altered all the time, and it’s much easier to do so back then when the entire population was illiterate, and the priests and scribes were in collisions with the Babylonian and the Roman Empire. Regardless, I hold the texts as super sacred, it’s just about understanding as best we can where the truth is, and it’s all revealed through understanding the nature of Christ and the historical documentation around the Nasaraeans. It’s truly the greatest story never fully told. Much respect to you and I’m sure some day if we could sit down and have a discussion over all the material, you wouldn’t feel so averse. Many blessings.

    Here we go... taking Scripture out of context and applying our own meaning to it. According to Scripture, Jesus was perfect. He had to be in order to be the sinless lamb who took away the sins of the world. Not a lot of people understand what this means. It means that Jesus followed the Torah perfectly. This also means that every year at Passover Jesus probably went to Jerusalem to give a yearly animal sacrifice. Not because He needed one, but to keep in accordance with the law. When Jesus said, "I desire mercy and not sacrifice," He was not thinking about the animals. It was because the religious leaders were more concerned with religious rituals than their hurting people. The sacrifice system did end, but again that has nothing to do with the animals. The entire NT is about Jesus Christ. He became our sin sacrifice. Therefore, we no longer need an animal sacrifice. "Thou shall not kill," is in the 10 Commandments, but it is referring to human beings. How do i know? Look below: Genrsis 9:1-6 Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. The fear and dread of you will fall on all the beasts of the earth, and on all the birds of the sky, on every creature that moves along the ground, and on all the fish in the sea; they are given into your hands everything that lives and moves about WILL be FOOD for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you EVERYTHING. But you must not eat meat that has life blood still in it. And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an account. I will demand an accounting from every animal, and from each human being too, I will demand an accounting for the life of another human being. Whoever sheds human blood, by humans their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind." It is NOT a sin to eat meat. Animal protein is a necessary part to a healthy human diet. The reason killing a human is a sin, but killing an animal is not is because we were created in the image of God and animals were not... being sentient has nothing to do with it.
